Following his trade, Baker Mayfield formally joined the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, but in order for him to do so, someone else had to be taken off the roster.

Unfortunately, this meant that rookie free agent quarterback Davis Cheek was released by the NFL organisation.

In April, Cheek, who had previously played collegiate football for nearby Elon, committed to Carolina. He was ranked No. 4 on the quarterback depth chart before to the Mayfield trade,

below Sam Darnold, P.J. Walker, and undrafted rookie Matt Corral. Cheek had a slim chance of making the team to begin with

but now that Mayfield has joined the team, there isn't much room for quarterbacks who are unsuitable for the current campaign or the foreseeable future.

Cheek spent four years as a quarterback at Elon University, compiling 8,548 passing yards, 51 touchdown passes, and 21 interceptions.

He was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award in 2021 and was named to the Second Team All-CAA.

The quarterback is now headed to the waiver wire, where he can be claimed by one of the other NFL teams.

He will, however, become a free agent on July 13 if that doesn't happen.

He might later join the Panthers again if they require a quarterback for their practise squad.
