In an interview with Variety, Schnapp talked about Will's journey and specifically addressed the changes in his personal life that have lately been included in Season 4.

Will has feelings for Mike, Schnapp stated, and it's quite obvious this season. "Over the previous few seasons, they have been consciously bringing that out

They made that suggestion early on in Season 1 and the tale developed gradually.

For Season 4, I believe it was simply me portraying this character who adores his best friend but struggles to know if he'll be welcomed or not, and who feels like a mistake and like he doesn't belong."

Fans felt that a particular sequence from Season 4 of Stranger Things, in which Will tries to soothe Mike about his insecurities regarding his connection with Eleven

presented particularly compelling evidence supporting Will's sexuality.

Will implies that Eleven requested the painting and that the descriptions of Mike as the heart and the leader were her ideas rather than his own.

then pulls out a painting he made and explains how it symbolises the link that the group of friends share

By the time the talk is through, Will is sobbing, but Mike has no idea. Will and I are so much fun to play with, Schnapp added.

The fact that he loves his best buddy but is unsure of how to tell him made this scene extremely significant for him.

Will's sexual orientation has not yet been officially confirmed by Schnapp. He previously stated, "I feel like [Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer] never really address [Will's sexuality] or clearly explain how Will is," in an interview.

"That's the beauty of it, I think, that it's just up to the audience's perception of whether it's Will kind of simply refusing to grow up and growing up slower than his buddies, or whether he is genuinely gay,"

Scnapp acknowledged that he had withheld the details on purpose to serve as a spoiler. It was obviously hinted to in Season 1: "It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his pals," he stated.

"They made it seem really real and clear as he has aged. He is gay, and he does love Mike, that much is now beyond a doubt.

The arc was slow previously, though. I believe it is done so wonderfully because it's so simple to turn a character queer all of a sudden."
